Audi 5000 – The original King of Unintended Acceleration – Whatthedileo

This is my 1985 Audi 5000. I still have the window sticker from this car. The video is from ~1995. I’m proud of some of my tweaks. The fake ‘el-cheapo’ car stereo faceplate that I used to hide my super-incredible JVC head unit. And the hole I cut out behind the back seat to mount my CD Changer (so I didn’t have to go out into the trunk when it was raining). Back to the JVC- that thing had a AUX jack that would let yoiu plug your iPod into. But it came out in 1989!!! Also, notice the center console… the 1985 Audi 5000 didn’t come with one! Shawn helped me get that piece from a salvage yard, and I made brackets and carpetted the sides. I have always been a huge fan of the Audi 5000. I feel that vehicle, and the Benz 190, gave birth to modern automobile design, what I call the ‘molded’ look. If you look at the styling of cars American cars from the mid 80′s and the late 80′s, it is startling. One by one, US cars went from chrome bumpers and choppy steel bodies to suddenly looking like they were formed out of a plastic mold. The Mercedes Benz 190 was introduced in 1993. The Audi 5000 was ‘born’ in Germany in 1983 as the 100. At Chrysler, the ’87 Le Baron coupe was their first new-age design. At GM, I believe the change started with Boneville SSE in ’87, and then the Grand Prix SE in ’88. At Ford, I think the ’86 Taurus is the most vivid example of the revolution.

Oh BTW can you tell me what your vent tempuratures are at the center vent with the passenger vent and rear vens to the back seat closed, leaving only drivers and center’s open with the AC on low and engine fully warmed up and ideling? I have come up with a way to get more cooling performance out of these cars in hot weather and would like more base comparisons. Let me know the ambient temps outside too if you can do this for me. CHeers mate. IC.

@IcechickenSr I also wanted to mention I converted my KH turbo engine to an MC-1 engine with the MAC 10/11b/c computer and chiped it, I can help you do the computer conversion from the MAC 7 if you want, i’ve been through it twice on the Exact same car and year as yours. The Auto’s are just fine with 15 psi of boost as long as you don’t do launches. If you don’t put her to the floor boards every time it’s more than up to the job. Mainly it’s nice for mountain and highway driving. 7 years on mine

Hey mate nice Audi, I have the exact same car except mine is the canadian modle yours is an “S” modle and mine is a “CD” modle which is belive is the diplomat modle. You comment in the info about the center console not being equiped in 1985 is incorrect. Many 5kt’s in 85 with automatics came with center consoles such as my car. mine has the lift up lid with casette tape holders inside as well as a coin holder.

@BRIGH58 well, the sudden accelleration was in the diesel models…the turbo would leak oil, and that oil would go right into the engine, and of course a diesel can run on oil, so the more the rpm’s went up, the more oil went into the engine…etc etc etc. so it was just a faulty turbo.

This Audi pioneered the new shape of vehicles.

Before it has hip, trendy, chic or ‘in’ to be accused of sudden acceleration, there was Audi. Once again, before its time.

Very nice and interesting video, that’s a beautiful Audi model, by the way that car was definitely innocent about that stupid story of the “sudden accelleration”.
